Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple of years, you’re probably aware that there’s a certain kids’ TV show, primarily targeted toward little girls, that has become ridiculously popular with adult men, sparking memes, conventions, and now, an iOS/Android game.
That show is, of course, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, a cartoon that is way better than it has any right to be. So how is the game?
Well… let me break it down in Brony and Non-Brony terms.
Brony terms: Remember that time Applejack went to another town for a competition and promised Ponyville she’d bring back lots of prize money, but ended up falling short of her promise and spent her days farming cherries? In this instance, the game is Applejack.
Non-Brony terms: The game should be called Farmville is Magic, because you’re essentially playing Farmville. You start off with one building, expand, build shops to farm goods and money, expand, buy new ponies to put in the new shops you just built, expand, and so on. The game is a free download, but “free” in the context of “you could just play for free, but you could also just buy your way through the game in small transactions,” or what’s been called “freemium” lately. You’ll also play minigames with the ponies you’ve collected along the way to help them earn stars - the game’s type of level system - and while those range from fairly decent to fun (the flying one should be packaged as an entirely separate game), they’re also extremely short, usually lasting 30 seconds or less.
Oh, and if you’re playing this on anything but a tablet, be warned: it will make your device extremely hot. This game sucks the life out of a phone (or iPod Touch) battery quickly. Best played in short bursts.
To be blunt, without the licensing, this game would be at best mediocre. It’s an addictive timewaster, for sure, but it’s been done before many times.
Final verdict: If you’re a fan of the show, be like me and get this game. If you’re not, don’t be like me, because there’s not enough content to keep you interested.
